THE LIGHTS
WENT OUT

EGYPT, 2011

A performance that tried to use various techniques to achieve the surprise and trick factor in a narrow space, using a hall that only accommodates 29 spectators, which creates a deep sense of distress and involvement. In this piece, I tried to achieve a result of the equation of high quality and low costs. I tried to translate complex and disjointed, scattered and complicated and very random ideas, to create a story of a person trying to escape in multiple ways.

People in Egypt used to call the process of power outages “the lights went out.” In this piece, we trace the journey of a person who found himself in a security building under investigation on the lights of a small charging lamp due to a power outage, forced to tell the story of his life, which led him to a chair in front of a detective; his relationships, his impulsive decisions and his desire to escape far away, we follow that journey to discover in the end when the electricity returns that we are in his house.
