THE MINCER

EGYPT, 2014

This project is an ambitious attempt to develop a performance piece within an alternative location and to pursue capacities for theatrical work to take place in unconventional spaces, while keeping the quality of artistic production high and developing the conceptual foundations on which the performances are based.

Thoughts and images are developed through ongoing research and attention to detail, focusing on placing the workers of this piece under the pressure of experimentation. The project aims to elicit authentic feeling from its participants and viewers. The television, radio, and lessons in the classroom, the lessons of religion, formalities and Laws...All of this forming our ethics.

The defeat was all around, and the text of this performance was about the relationship between authority and rebellions. Moreover, how rebellions sometimes would play roles framed by the authorities. Philosophically, the name of the performance means how the bigger frameworks are being crushed into fragments and we need to put these fragments together to re-read the bigger framework.

The Mincer showed how it is possible to create rebellions as prototypes, with no understanding that the very nature of individuality is different, which lead to their being minced.

As for the technique, we wanted to build an artwork that is fragmented on the levels of: the characters lines, the stage, and the art scenes.

The main line of the idea was how the visual compositions that are fragments together represent the visual composition. The process of designing and its visuality were implemented through the many sketches we have designed side by side with the scenographer. The scenographer's design was aiming to be outside of the known theatrical settings of stage and audience.
